Our DIY stores sell small metal plugs together with the wooden dowels with a pin in the center in the exact diameter of the wooden dowels. You drill the required holes for the wooden dowels into one workpiece, insert the plugs, press the second workpiece against them and thus obtain the exact markings. Happy end.

    • @theoldantleredmyth

The perk of spinning the workpiece instead of the bit is it will naturally want to stay centered. The flex is not from the bit going off center in the hole, but because the it's fighting to stay centered. It's actually fairly difficult to go crooked doing this.

Good job on your dowel-centering jig! I see others trying to out-do one another copying each others' sarcastic comments. But every step of what you've done is necessary to centering both the bit and the dowel, using the arbor for centering and the vise for holding that line. If you'd kept the bit chucked into the arbor, point down like normal, and merely clamped the dowel, you'd be guessing at its location in the vise. This way centers both.
And to those who say you can buy a set of dowel points, you could literally do that with every jig ever made in a shop. This lets you center your dowels in your project without having to wait on a purchase, or make a purchase for a joint you might only do rarely.
    So again, good work!

  • @teds9896
    @teds9896 13 дней назад +1

People are saying this is complicated. Nope! He's making little dowel pin joint markers; a few minutes job that once you have them you have them. And everything done here is PERFECT way to line up and center things PERFECTLY. My only take on how to be just a bit more sure, would be to not have the drill bit out so far when drilling the center holes in the dowel pins. Then again, shouldn't be a problem if one is careful.

I wouldn’t be too hard on the guy.
He just basically made a vertical lathe where he could punch holes in dowels all day long without having to crush them in a clamp.
    I’ve done worse, by necessity.
I had to carve down part of a 2” diameter pin that was six inches long for a truck suspension.
The original part was no longer available, and I don’t have a lathe.
    …or do I???
The end of the pin had a grease fitting hole to fit an NPT 3/8” fitting, coarse.
Fitted a straight barb into it, and ground off the barb.
Put my drill press to the lowest speed, and chucked the part.
Did the minor adjustments to make sure it ran true.
I rigged up a rest for another tool, and spun up the part.
Used an angle grinder, steadied by the rest, and made the proper step in the pin.
A vernier got me to the point I could start polishing the new surface with a bit still left.
Took a couple hours, but it worked.
I had set the vernier to a bit over the final diameter.
Used a few feet of coarse, then fine emery cloth to smooth it and polish it.
After all, what is a lathe, except a gigantic horizontal drill?

It's not as easy as it looks to make mitered joints line up this well with dowels. In my experience, it can be more challenging with softer woods, like pine. With softer wood, the rings in the wood are more dense and thus harder than the less dense lighter wood in between them. This makes it difficult to accurately drill pilot holes regardless of how well you measure, because the drill bit will want to "slip" off the harder rings and move towards the softer wood in between the rings.
The video shows a good method to quickly and reliable mark the center of the adjacent holes. You'd still have to drill the adjacent hole with accuracy, but it seems to me that this would cut the margin of error in half as it will mark the exact spot on the adjacent piece regardless of whether or not the initial holes are perfectly centered or not, while also creating a pilot hole of sorts with the tips of the nails. Once you have the guide pins made, you wouldn't really even need the drill press anymore to make accurate joints.
Thanks for sharing, I'll have to give this a try.

This is actually a pretty good method hack. Especially to those who dont have alot of tools. Even if you do, this has other applications. Im always amazed at the haters who probably dont even own tools other than a set of pink handled screwdrivers who comment negatively. Oh well. I liked it. And yes I have a shop slam full of tools.

The problem with this setup is that the tip of the drill can deflect. And that will make a non-concentric hole. Better let the drillbit protude only a few millimeters. This way concentricity is achieved. Of course you need to lift the drill out for the longer hole.
BTW, you can see at the beginning that the drill vibrates. That is because the tip of the drill is deflected! Happens if the tip is not 100% centered. Or the wood not homgenous.
